Hidehiko Agata (National Astronomical Observatory of Japan / SOKENDAI)

The International Astronomical Union (IAU), founded in 1919, is a non-governmental global body aimed at advancing astronomy through international cooperation. Japan joined as a national member in 1920 and ranks third worldwide in individual membership. Since the 2009 International Year of Astronomy, the IAU has shifted its strategy from astronomer-focused activities toward broader societal contributions, implementing a ten-year strategic plan that emphasizes international cooperation, inclusion, development, and education, and aims to contribute to the SDGs and world peace. This talk reviews these activities and discusses the role that international cooperation in basic science can play in stabilizing today's international community.
