Roughly one-quarter of the universe's energy density is occupied by an unknown substance called dark matter. Dark matter forms bound systems called halos in the universe, and cosmological observations show that the world of Standard Model matter is embedded within this halo hierarchical structure. The possibility that dark matter is a new particle outside the Standard Model is now widely discussed, and various detection strategies are actively pursued.
