Can Jellyfish Taxonomy and Life-History Research Connect with Theoretical Science?
Research on jellyfish taxonomy and life history has traditionally been pursued as basic biological research. However, new research directions are now emerging, such as predicting mass jellyfish outbreaks by combining life-history data with oceanographic data, and using machine learning on images and video for species identification and automated discovery. In this seminar, I will introduce what kind of organisms jellyfish are, and discuss with the audience how jellyfish biology can connect with theoretical and data science to open up new research areas.
