Protons and neutrons contain quarks and gluons bound together by the strong interaction. To treat this interaction theoretically, a numerical approach known as lattice QCD is used. However, lattice QCD calculations are performed in a system of finite volume, so the resulting effects (finite-volume effects) must be evaluated carefully.
